The mission of the Heat Transfer Committee is to be actively concerned with all aspects of heat transfer in gas turbines. This includes active cooling of high temperature components such as turbine airfoils and combustor liners; temperature control of disks, seals, and cases; and heat transfer in regenerators, waste heat systems, and fired heat exchangers. All phases of technology from fundamental analytical and experimental investigations to results of extensive field service are encompassed.
The Committee endeavors to improve the state-of-the-art in each of these areas through sponsorship of meetings such as technical sessions, panel discussions, and workshops. These are generally held at the IGTI TURBO EXPO. The specific topics of discussion are selected from areas which have the greatest current interest and importance.
These meetings provide a forum for the interchange of technical information for all workers in the field. The primary Committee responsibilities for the meetings are to select appropriate topics, insure the technical quality, and provide a moderator.
It is recognized that the Committee has a dual function. It is also the K-14 Gas Turbine Committee for the ASME Heat Transfer Division. As such, it represents the interests of the gas turbine community to the Heat Transfer Division. This association with the Heat Transfer Division is especially useful because it furthers communications between the International Gas Turbine Institute, with strong industrial affiliations, and the Heat Transfer Division which has strong academic affiliations. Interaction with the Heat Transfer Division is most significantly felt during Committee-sponsored technical sessions under the auspices of the Heat Transfer Division at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) and the National Heat Transfer Conference (NHTC).
